The Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka, has officially announced that it is now mandatory to provide the National Identity Card (NIC) number when applying for any examinations conducted by the department. Accordingly, all candidates planning to sit for the 2026 G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) Examination, which is scheduled to be held in December 2026, must obtain their National Identity Cards without delay. The department stated that all school principals island-wide have already been instructed to take the necessary steps to prepare NICs for school candidates well in advance. Principals have been advised to guide and inform both students and parents regarding this procedure. The official notice stresses that it is the sole responsibility of all school and private candidates to ensure their National Identity Cards are ready before the official calling of applications begins. Therefore, to avoid any last-minute technical difficulties or rejection of applications, all prospective O/L candidates are urged to take immediate action to secure their NICs.
